The best place is Barra if you never plan to visit Rio proper. Once you're there its great and beautiful and like a little America but traveling below favelas to get there after dark and with bandidos on the road, you'll think of moving quickly. Plus the traffic getting there and coming into the city is crazy.



To answer your question - it depends on what you find and the price you are willing to pay. I have friends that live in Leblon and Lagoa and Ipanema and they are all happy with their neighborhood and they are close enough together to walk. If you haven't been there before, you won't be able to tell, without someone showing you the lines that separate them, from one to the other. The best way to figure it out is to go there and look at property and see what you like. If you are only going for a short time and you are set on these two neighborhoods then I would choose Ipanema since there is way more going on immediately at your door step. Not as much as Copacabana but Ipanema is alive and kicking 24/7.
